Why Isn’t My Business Showing Up on Google?

You searched your own business name on Google. Nothing came up. Or maybe you searched “cafe near me” or “clinic in Dehradun” and your competitor showed up, not you.

It’s frustrating. And it’s more common than you think.

The good news: this almost always has a fixable reason. Let’s go through them one by one, in plain language, no jargon.

1. Your Google Business Profile Isn’t Set Up (Or Isn’t Verified)

This is the #1 reason. If someone searches “bakery near me” and your business isn’t showing on the map, it’s usually because:

  • You never created a Google Business Profile (GBP), or
  • You created it but never completed the verification step (Google sends a postcard, phone call, or video verification), or
  • Your profile got suspended for missing information

Quick check: Search your business name on Google. If a box with your photos, hours, and reviews doesn’t appear on the right side, your GBP needs attention.

Fix: Go to google.com/business, claim your listing, and complete every section, category, hours, photos, phone number, website link. An incomplete profile is treated as a weak profile by Google.

2. Your Website Is Brand New

If your website is a few days or weeks old, Google simply hasn’t had time to find and index it yet. This is normal, not a mistake on your part.

Fix: Submit your website to Google Search Console and request indexing manually. This usually speeds things up from weeks to a few days.

3. Your Website Has No Real Content

Google needs to understand what your business does and where you do it. A homepage that just says “Welcome to XYZ” with no real description won’t rank for anything.

Fix: Write at least one clear paragraph explaining:

  • What service you offer
  • Which city or area you serve
  • Who it’s for

Example: instead of “We do marketing,” write “We help cafes and clinics in Dehradun get more customers through Google and social media.”

4. Your Business Name, Address, and Phone Number Don’t Match Everywhere

Google cross-checks your business details across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook page, Justdial, and other directories. If your phone number is different in two places, or your address is written differently (“Rajpur Road” vs “Rajpur Rd”), Google gets confused about whether you’re a real, trustworthy business.

Fix: Make sure your business Name, Address, and Phone number (called “NAP”) are written exactly the same everywhere online.

5. You Have Very Few (or No) Google Reviews

Reviews aren’t just for customers, they’re a ranking signal. A business with 3 reviews and one with 80 reviews are not treated equally by Google, even if both offer the same service.

Fix: After every happy customer interaction, simply ask: “Could you leave us a quick Google review?” Send them your direct review link to make it a 30-second task.

6. Your Website Is Slow or Not Mobile-Friendly

Most local searches happen on a phone. If your website takes more than 3-4 seconds to load, or looks broken on mobile, Google pushes it down, and users leave before they even see your services.

Fix: Test your site on your own phone. If it feels slow or cramped, that’s a signal to fix it before anything else.

7. Nobody Else on the Internet Is Talking About You

Google trusts businesses that other websites mention. This could be a local news article, a directory listing, a blog that recommends you, or a link from a partner business.

Fix: Start small, get listed on local directories (Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMart if relevant), ask partner businesses to mention you, and consider getting written about in a local blog or news site.

8. You’re Only Optimized for Google, Not AI Search

This is new in 2026: many people now ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews things like “best cafe in Dehradun” instead of typing it into a search bar. If your website doesn’t clearly explain who you are and what you do in plain text (not just images or videos), AI tools have nothing to recommend.

Fix: Make sure your website has clear written content about your business, AI tools read text, not just design.

So, Where Do You Start?

If you only have time to fix one thing this week, start with your Google Business Profile. It has the fastest, most visible impact for local businesses.

If you’ve checked all of the above and you’re still not showing up, there’s likely a deeper technical issue, something in how your website is built, or how it was set up initially.
